Visio Divina // Sacred Seeing
Throughout history the arts have been a mechanism for storytelling, documenting historical events, entertainment, even propaganda, but maybe most importantly the arts have a way of expressing our deepest emotions. We can see a painting, hear a song, read a line of poetry and immediately feel in our bones "Yes, that is exactly how I feel". Since the arts do have such a rich connection to our emotional lives, we have put together a Visio Divina reflection for each of the emotions we are exploring in the sermon series: Hard Feelings.
We invite you to set aside of few moments, find a comfortable space to sit and take a few deep breaths. Then follow the prompts below to reflect on the artwork and see how God may speak to you through it.
Select one of the pieces of art to mediate on and gaze at the entire picture. Notice the shapes, the colors, and the lighting. Notice the detail of both the foreground and background. Once you have visually canvased the artwork, note what has drawn your attention.

Shapes of Fear by Maynard Dixon 1930 and “The Scream” - Eduard Munch
Meditate on the part of the picture that has drawn your attention.
Why do you think God drew your attention to this particular aspect of the artwork?
What does the image stir up in you, bring forth in you?
Are there feelings attached to what this image (or your chosen section) has brought to you? If so, how would you describe or name those feelings?
Does this pertain to your life today or a memory of a past time?
How is God speaking to you?
Rest in silence to simply be with our Creator
