Our Leadership

Leadership roles at Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church include the staff, Elders of Session, and Board of Deacons.

Staff

The Ministry and Support Staff at PLCPC strives to provide leadership, direction, opportunities, counseling and more to those that we serve in our Church community and beyond.

Staff

Elders of Session

The elected Body of Elders oversee a number of critical church functions. Among the formal ministries are adult discipleship, building and grounds, children's discipleship, youth discipleship, mission beyond, worship and music, evangelism and church growth, long range planning, and finance and stewardship. (The Finance Committee oversees the financial aspects of the various ministries, which benefit our congregants and the greater community and missions. The Stewardship Committee develops annual programs to encourage faithful pledging in support of our ministries.)

Elders

Board of Deacons

Our Deacons help those in need, in our church and broader community. The office of Deacons is one of compassion, witness, and service after the example of Jesus. Our ministry is to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress. We strive to meet the needs of those around us. The Deacons actively support their care-giving ministries by performing a wide variety of services.

Deacons

Serve in Leadership: Become a Deacon or Elder at PLCPC

Serving as a Deacon or Elder at Point Loma Church is both an honor and a calling. Leadership in the church is not just about making decisions—it’s about spiritual growth, meaningful service, and shaping the direction of our faith community. As our church continues to adapt and grow in a changing world, we are looking for leaders who are prayerful, committed, and ready to walk alongside others in faith.

Why Leadership Matters

Good leaders are essential for our church to thrive. They help us stay aligned with God’s calling, provide spiritual guidance, and steward our resources wisely. At this time in our church's life, we are especially seeking leaders under the age of 50 and those with families, who can bring fresh perspectives and energy as we explore new ways to serve our community and live out our mission.

What Elders Do

Elders, along with the pastors, form the Session—the governing body responsible for the spiritual leadership and oversight of the church. Elders help shape church policy, oversee budgets, guide ministries, mentor staff, and most importantly, pray and discern God’s will for our community. Elders are elected for a three-year term, attend monthly Session meetings, and typically dedicate 2–3 hours per week to church leadership. No previous experience is necessary—just a heart to serve and a willingness to grow. Training is provided in the fall, including theological study and writing a personal Credo of Faith.

What Deacons Do

Deacons lead ministries of care, compassion, and hospitality. They are the hands and hearts of the church, supporting congregants through life’s celebrations and struggles. Deacon duties include greeting, flower deliveries, organizing events like pancake breakfasts, sending cards, supporting grieving families, and coordinating care ministries. Deacons serve for two years and typically dedicate 2–3 hours per week. Training and support are provided to help you step into this meaningful role with confidence.

Common Hesitations About Becoming a Leader

  • “I’m too busy.” Many leaders balance work, family, and service. Meetings and many responsibilities offer online options, and we work as a team to cover each other when life happens.
  • “I have no experience.” That’s okay! Training and mentorship are provided.
  • “I’m too young (or old).” There is no ideal age—God calls people of all ages and backgrounds.
